Man from the South

In the story, if the soldier were to lose the bet he would lose his pinky finger along with 50% of his grip strength. Losing his pinky finger would effect his ability to grip and throw a grenade properly. When gripping a grenade you use a spherical grip that involves action from all digits. This grip would be greatly effected by the loss of the pinky finger because it is used as a stabilizer and strength to hold the grenade. Along with the grip, the throw of the grenade would be effected by losing the pinky finger. When throwing a grenade you do not use your typical baseball throwing motion and instead start with the grenade waist high and come across your body to release the toss. This is effected due to the loss of power behind the throw because the pinky finger provides a significant amount of strength to the hand decreasing the stabilization to the bottom of the grenade. A modification of this action would be for the soldier to toss the grenade underhanded. The underhand toss wouldn't be as powerful, however it wouldn't be effected as much by the loss of the pinky finger because less stabilization is needed.

  1. I thought your modification was very simple and easy to do that is not too complicated for someone to understand. Also, without having the use of the pinky it also impacts opposability, so like you said grip and stabilization would be something that would be difficult to perform if he were to throw it overhand.

  2. This is a very important occupation that I did not think about, because for a soldier throwing a grenade incorrectly could be fatal. Great job coming up with a quick and easy modification to help solve this!

  3. I think your occupation is creative and and unique. Throwing grenade is something most soldiers might have to do while in their line of service. I think your adaption is simple and would be efficient so that the soldier could still operate the task.

  4. I am so glad you thought of the grenade! I would have never thought about how much trouble the soldier would have in doing the things that are necessary to his survival on the battlefield. I love how your modification was simple, but effective.

  6. I think that the occupation you chose was very practical for his role of being a soldier and original! Your modification was great in not just helping him complete his occupation of grenade throwing, but also giving him a way to do it and remain safe!

  7. Leah,
The occupation you chose was something that I did not even think about. Safety in this situation would be a huge concern. The modification was reasonable and easy to adapt to. Great job explaining the use of the various grips in your post. It helped with a concrete understanding.

  8. Wow! How creative! Thanks for thinking outside the box! I enjoyed reading all about hand grenades and how you are supposed to throw one. I hope I never have to do such a thing, but if I do, I will try to remember your guidelines! :)
