Health Literacy and Health Promotion

Being enrolled in the "Serving the Underserved" class and listening to the lecture today, I am aware of the obligatory need for educating individuals on health promotion and health literacy. As future practitioners, it is important for us to ensure our clients/caregivers understanding of what OT is, what their diagnosis is, the services being provided to them, and basic information about maximizing quality of life for the client and family. It is important for us to communicate this in non-technical language, tailored to the decision maker, and concise. We accomplish this through the holistic, client-centered approach with the use of adaptations and alterations to promote shared decision-making between the client and therapist.

Results of a study done showed OT as being the only discipline to have lower re-admission rates to hospitals through the services they provide. This is possible because we not only give recommendations to the caregiver as well as the client and are able to determine if clients can live independently or if they will need further support/help. It is our job to promote social justice and equity to all individuals despite socioeconomic status and transform the barrier between health professionals and uneducated people.
